The Working Spaniel Club (North Island) and South Island Working Spaniel Clubs are dedicated to Natural Game Trials for the working spaniel. Usually there is a South Island trial week in May and a North Island week in August. In these trials, only wild game is hunted. Gamebirds are shot over dogs within the gazetted hunting season according to license conditions. Trials on “wild” game can be held outside of the hunting season, but blanks are fired or fur only is shot.
